flights

There are a few good ways to get to Oaxaca City. Flights are usually about $700-800, but they can get more expensive during the Guelaguetza festival. It’s highly recommended that you buy your flight as soon as possible.

Fastest/fewest stops

  • United has flights via Houston

  • American has flights via DFW

  • Volaris flies direct from LAX

Most frequent connections

Via Mexico City (MEX) → Oaxaca

  • Tons of daily MEX→OAX flights (~1 hour) on Aeroméxico, Viva, and Volaris. You can get a flight from the US to MEX, and then catch a direct flight to OAX on another airline. Easy same‑day connection from SFO, LAX, or PDX into MEX.

  • MEX is a big airport, so you’ll want to give yourself time to have time to clear immigration and customs and to get to the domestic terminal.

Best hack

San Diego CBX → Tijuana (TIJ) → Oaxaca (nonstop)

  • Use the Cross Border Xpress (CBX) bridge in San Diego to walk into TIJ, then fly nonstop TIJ→OAX on Volaris or Viva Aerobus (multiple weekly/daily options). This can be dramatically cheaper than U.S. airlines.
